Sirodhara is a traditional Ayurvedic therapy in which a continuous stream of liquid medicine is gently poured over the head. The head is considered the seat of Kapha Dosha, Prana, and important Marma or vital points.
According to Tantra Shastra, the head is regarded as the region of the moon in relation to our cosmic existence. Sirodhara is traditionally understood to increase this mooness, thereby supporting Ojus.
In cases of psoriasis, where toxic manifestations are understood to disturb metabolism and accelerate the maturation of the skin, Sirodhara may be used after appropriate purification of the body to help address this hypermetabolism.
Sirodhara is commonly performed with medicated buttermilk prepared with gooseberry and other herbs, known as Thakradhara. Gooseberry is a Rasayana, or rejuvenative drug, traditionally associated with healthy ageing and increasing mooness. Milk prepared with suitable herbs and decoctions may also be used according to the individual's condition.
